Brancaster

A few weekends ago we spent a weekend at Brancaster on the North Norfolk coast with six friends. We stayed at The White Horse which was excellent - but a bit pricey! Nevertheless, you get what you pay for, and this was worth it.

Inside the Geffrye Museum

Apologies for the gap in postings. I was having problems uploading my photos - I think it's OK now, we'll see.

This is the inside of the Geffrye Museum which mainly consists of room settings throughout the centuries - one in each of the almshouses.

At the end of the museum is a changing exhibition which was about flowers in the home on this occasion.

The Geffrye Museum

This is the Geffrye Museum - why do THEY always put piles of builders rubbish in front of buildings just as I'm about to take a photo?
It's housed in some old almshouses and you can read all about it in the photo below.
Amazing interior photos to follow...

Ghost Trains

We managed to walk yet another section of the Regents Canal.

We happened to be in the area on the last day that they were running Ghost Trains on the soon to be re-opened East London Line.
It's an overground service on a re-opened underground line - if that makes sense?

The trains look very smart although there's not much seating inside, but lots of standing room.

The Ghost Trains were very frequent and were being run to give the drivers familiarity with their new route - without passengers to get in the way. All the stations were manned with friendly staff very willing to answer any questions. Of course, SWMBO had some!

Where they lived

This is the area around Haggerston where many of the family lived.
Much of it has been demolished as slum clearance, and following blitz damage.

Columbia Road

This is the Columbia Road Sunday flower market.
Just a shame it's impractical to buy anything then cart it around London all day before getting it home on a probably crowded train!

Ancestor hunting

A few weeks ago we went up to London to explore the area where my maternal relatives once lived.
We went to Haggerston, Hoxton, Bethnal Green and Spitalfields.
This is a statue at Liverpool Street Station commemorating the children who escaped by train from Germany during the war.

A nice mix of old and new near the station.

River Ver walk - Shafford Mill

I was delighted recently when asked by an ex-colleague to accompany him on a walk along the River Ver from Redbourn to Shafford Mill near St.Albans. He is gradually completing a walk of the Hertfordshire Way, and this was a section he had not walked.
Shafford Mill.

Hungry heron.

Definitely Spring.
