Canada - Rocky Mountaineer - Avalanche Alley

Due to high winds we were stranded in 'avalanche alley' as no trains were allowed to cross a bridge over the river.
These wires detect any avalanche and trigger an alarm in the control centre if two or more wires are broken at the same time.
 

 

We couldn't move forward because of this freight train in front of us.
 

After we were hit by falling rocks, the freight train was persuaded to move up a bit so we could get to safety.
Three or four of these curved glass panels were cracked at a cost of around £6000 each.

This shows how long the train is.
We did walk the whole length once, and it was a long way!

By upgrading to Gold Leaf class, all the drinks were 'free' so there were quite a number of people trying to persuade others that they didn't normally start drinking this early in the day!
